Protect Your Assets
If someone were to ask you ‘what’s your biggest asset?’ How would you respond?
Think about it for a moment. What do you consider your biggest asset?
Some might go down the material direction… house, car, stocks, investments, that rare coin collection.
Others perhaps think about skills and what you bring to the table… big vision thinker, problem solver, team cheerleader, can solve ridiculous equations in a moment.
All these are lovely, and yes are considered assets. But that’s not what I’m talking about. Your biggest asset is your energy. It’s your ability to control and choose how you show up, your presence, how you respond, and how you interact with the world around you. You must protect that asset.
Like energy attracts like energy. What you put out is what you get back and at the same time the energy of the environment that you’re in and the people who you surround yourself with rub off. Take note of the latter and protect yourself from absorbing all sorts of ‘ish from other people and situations that don’t serve you.
Remembering this is increasingly important as we approach the end of the year with all of the various holidays, year end events, celebrations, work parties, and even the pressure to look forward to the future to make next year the ‘best year yet’. The weeks ahead can often be incredibly stressful and draining. The irony is that this is the opposite of what this time of year is about.
Take a moment to consider what takes away from your potent energy and your ability to fully enjoy and embrace the moments. Identify those things so you can be aware and shift into your own power and energy. Know that if you need to say ‘no’ to something it’s not selfish or avoidance, it’s protecting your assets. It the most powerful gift you can give yourself. If you allow your energy to be drained starting this week, or maybe it’s even already started, imagine how exhausted you’ll be by the time New Years rolls around.
Four easy ways to protect your assets:
Identify and commit to a practice that will help keep you grounded and in your own energy each day. Make it a non-negotiable. Maybe that’s working out, getting a few minutes of fresh air, just a few deep breaths, a good laugh.
Linger Awhile in what you do have. Even in chaotic, stressful, or less than ideal moments. Find joy in the smallest of things.
Pause before saying ‘yes’ to anything. Don’t overthink it, but give the request a moment of space before you jump on it. Ensure you’re saying ‘yes’ for you and not the expectations of others.
Rest.
I challenge you to protect your assets; protect and hold your own energy sacred. See how doing so allows you to move through the coming weeks and into the new year with less stress and dread but with hope, joy, and expansive energy. This energy allows you to step forward, to grow, and to really engage in the things that you want to.
The way you spend your days and moments is the way you live your entire life, so why not start protecting your assets, your energy and presence, right now.
